Ask for Angela
Ask for Angela is a nationally recognised safeguarding initiative that provides a simple and discreet way for people to seek help when they feel unsafe, uncomfortable, vulnerable, or at risk.
Originally launched in licensed venues, the scheme can be used in a wide range of settings, including pubs, bars, clubs, festivals, public transport, retail environments, and other public spaces.
If a situation begins to feel wrong—whether on a date, during a night out with friends, or following an interaction that causes concern—individuals can approach a member of staff and ask for “Angela”. This phrase acts as a discreet signal that they require assistance. Trained staff can then provide support in a calm, confidential, and non-confrontational manner, helping the individual move to a place of safety, arrange transport, contact friends or family, or seek further assistance if required.
The scheme empowers people to ask for help without having to explain their situation publicly or draw unwanted attention to themselves.
